From a scientific and clinical perspective, studying the relationship between grief and mediumship is important because experiences of perceived communication with the deceased are relatively common in bereavement and can have profound emotional, psychological, and meaning-making implications. Systematic research in this area helps distinguish adaptive from distressing experiences, informs culturally sensitive models of grief, and contributes to more nuanced, evidence-based approaches in mental health and bereavement care.
Grief-related encounters with mediumship deserve careful scientific attention because they often occur during periods of emotional vulnerability, where experiences can foster meaning and healing—or, if mishandled, deepen distress. Empirical research is especially important in cultures where stigma and silence surround these experiences, limiting open dialogue and our ability to understand both their adaptive and maladaptive pathways.
